Planning Meals An Entire Year in Advance ?

January 21, 2010

FRIENDSWOOD, Texas  — Do you know what you’re cooking for dinner tonight? Planning ahead can be a great way to save time and money but one woman is taking it to a whole new level.

It may be hard to believe, but a Friendswood mom not only knows what she is feeding her family every single night of the week, she has it all planned out for the entire year! She says having a plan has cut her grocery bill by more than half and she’s sharing her strategy with us.

Leslie Chisolm admits keeping up with a family of six that includes four boys is not easy.

“They know exactly what they are having,” Chisolm explained. “It’s easier on me because I know what we are having. I don’t stress out and say what am I going to cook tonight, what am I going to cook tonight?”

Chisolm and her husband came up with the idea to plan every single dinner for the entire year after trips to the grocery store were getting expensive.

She recalled, “It was two years ago and my husband looked at me and said, ‘Our grocery bill is out of control.’”

Chisolm says she was doing a lot of compulsive shopping or wasting food she wasn’t using. The family was also eating out a lot. That’s when she decided to make her plan. Chisolm’s plan works like this. First she asked her family what they like to eat and what they don’t like.

She said, “We try and pick a different meat, with different vegetables and different sides that way we get a full balanced meal.”

Then she made a list of entrees and sides. From that list, Chisolm made up her meal plan on a calendar. Every single day of every month there is something different to eat, with one or two days a month built in for leftovers.

When it comes to shopping for groceries, Chisolm always takes her menu to the store. She also builds up a stockpile when items go on sale.

“You can wait for the meats to go on sale and the vegetables to go on sale,” she said.

Finally, Chisolm buys in bulk to save money. When she gets home she separates her servings.

“Put it on my baggies, I label it and it’s stacked in my freezer,” she said.

Then when Chisolm is ready to cook each night, it’s on her calendar and she’s fully stocked at home.

She explained, “It makes my life easier because its one less thing that I have to worry about because it’s already written down.”

Puppy Lick ?

January 23, 2009

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.

This is my precious little puppy named Pumpkin back in November when she was 7 weeks old. I love her so much. We previously had a german sheperd for 12 years that passed away. My heart was sore for several years and I didn’t buy another dog because the pain of losing our sheperd (Sadie) was still too fresh in my heart and mind. Finally though, my daughter kept begging and begging. (So did my husband for that matter !) So for my daughters 16th birthday, we bought her Pumpkin. What was I waiting for ? This puppy brings me so much joy ! She is always doing something silly to make me laugh.

Pumpkin is now 16 weeks old.

When we first got Pumpkin she took over the cat bed despite the fact that we bought her a bed of her own. Pumpkin *thinks* that she still fits in it…haha !

Some Things I Believe

December 7, 2008

I Believe…
That just because two people argue, doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. And just because they don’t argue, doesn’t mean they do love each other.

I Believe…
That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I Believe…
That it’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I Believe…
That you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I Believe…
That you can keep going long after you think you can’t.

I Believe…
That we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

I Believe…
That either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I Believe…
That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I Believe…
That money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I Believe…
That sometimes the people you expect to kick you When you’re down, will be the ones to help you get back up.

I Believe…
That sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel.

I Believe…
That it isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I Believe…
That no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief.

I Believe…
That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I Believe…
That even when you think you have no more to give, if a friend cries out to you…… will find the strength to help.

I Believe…
That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

I Believe…
That the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

Memories Of My Little Peapod

November 9, 2008

I found Cathy through a work at home mom blog that I regularly read and found it to be a treasure worth sharing ! Cathy sells personalized handmade ornaments (perfect for this time of year !) -and they are the cutest little things. One of her biggest sellers, a personalized pea pod ornament, was far too much for me to resist ! I absolutely had to have one because not only was it cute, but it also brought back fond memories from when my son Timmy was dressed as a pea pod for his 2nd halloween. He had a little dark green suit that had these lighter green foam balls velcroed to the front of it. It was topped off with a little hat that had a stem on top. He looked so adorable and you couldn’t help but laugh because it was just plain funny. Wow….that was a long time ago. My son is now 15 years old…haha !

Check out Cathy’s ornaments and grab a few for your tree this year. She has a big variety of personaized ornaments including ones for new baby, newlyweds, naughty girls (check out the panty ornament !) and can also make personalized pins as well.

Paul Newman Dead At 83

September 30, 2008

Paul Newman, one of the last of the great 20th-century movie stars, died Friday at his home in Westport, Conn. He was 83. The cause was cancer, said Jeff Sanderson of Chasen & Company, Mr. Newman’s publicists.

He acted in more than 65 movies over more than 50 years, drawing on a physical grace, unassuming intelligence and good humor that made it all seem effortless. But the movies and the occasional stage role were never enough for him. He became a successful racecar driver, winning several Sports Car Club of America national driving titles. He even competed at Daytona in 1995 as a 70th birthday present to himself. In 1982, as a lark, he decided to sell a salad dressing he had created and bottled for friends at Christmas. Thus was born the Newman’s Own brand, an enterprise he started with his friend A.E. Hotchner, the writer. More than 25 years later the brand has expanded to include, among other foods, lemonade, popcorn, spaghetti sauce, pretzels, organic Fig Newmans and wine. (His daughter Nell Newman runs the company’s organic arm.) All its profits, of more than $200 million, have been donated to charity, the company says.

Several years before the establishment of Newman’s Own, on Nov. 28, 1978, Scott Newman, the oldest of Mr. Newman’s six children and his only son, died at 28 of an overdose of alcohol and pills. His father’s monument to him was the Scott Newman Center, created to publicize the dangers of drugs and alcohol. It is headed by Susan Newman, the oldest of his five daughters.
